Lesson 1
The starting cells
The testes are two body parts in males. Inside them are lots of tiny, coiled tubes.
Spermatogonia sit in a row along the outer wall of those tubes. They are roundish cells with a big nucleus.
They are stem cells, cells that can split again and again to make new cells.
Wow!Spermatogonia can keep making new cells for most of a person's life!
Lesson 2
Starting the line
When someone grows up, spermatogonia start dividing. Each time one splits:
- Some new cells stay as stem cells, so the supply never runs out.
- Others move toward the middle of the tube and begin changing, step by step, into sperm cells.
Sperm cells carry half of the instructions (DNA) needed to make a baby.
