Lesson 1
A big, round cell
Primary oocytes live in the ovaries. Each one is wrapped in a thin layer of flat helper cells. Together they make a tiny bubble called a follicle.
An oocyte is round, with a large nucleus. When it grows, it becomes one of the biggest cells in the human body.
Wow!A fully grown egg cell is about as wide as a strand of hair. That is huge for a cell!
Lesson 2
Waiting for its turn
Primary oocytes are made before birth. Then they pause and rest.
- When someone grows up, a few wake up and start to grow each month.
- Usually just one finishes growing and leaves the ovary as an egg cell.
- Some rest for more than 40 years before their turn comes.
An egg cell carries half of the instructions (DNA) needed to make a baby.
Try thisPress Wake up on the 3D model and watch the oocyte start to grow.
