Lesson 1
A cell with a hairy top
The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus, or womb. Their inside is lined with a carpet of cells.
Many of these are ciliated cells. Each one is tall, and its top is covered with lots of tiny hairs called cilia.
Wow!The egg cell is one of the biggest cells in your body. It is about the width of a hair, just big enough to see as a tiny dot.
Lesson 2
Moving the egg
The cilia all beat together, in waves, toward the uterus. It's like a crowd passing a beach ball over their heads.
- The cilia help sweep the egg cell into the tube.
- They help move it gently toward the uterus.
- The muscles in the tube wall squeeze to help too.
If an egg cell and a sperm cell join, a baby can start to grow, and the cilia help move it to the uterus.
Try thisPress Beat the cilia on the 3D model, then press Move the egg.
