Lesson 1
Down in the hair root
Each hair grows out of a tiny pocket in your skin called a follicle. At the bottom is a round bulb.
Trichocytes live in that bulb. They sit next to tiny blood tubes that bring them food and oxygen, so they can work fast.
Wow!The hair you can see is made of cells that are no longer alive. That's why getting a haircut doesn't hurt!
Lesson 2
Building a hair
Trichocytes divide again and again. The new cells get pushed upward. As they go, they fill up with tough keratin and harden.
Stacked together, they make the hair shaft, the strand you can see. New cells at the bottom keep pushing it up, so it grows longer.
Try thisPress Grow hair on the 3D model to watch the hair get pushed up out of the skin.
