Under every nail is a special patch of skin called the nail bed. It holds your nail on tight while the nail slowly slides forward.

Lesson 1

The skin under your nail

The nail bed is the skin right under your nail. Its cells line up in tiny ridges, like the rows of a plowed field.

The bottom of the nail has matching grooves, so the two fit together and the nail stays on.

Wow!

Your nail is see-through! It looks pink because of the tiny blood tubes in the nail bed under it.
