Lesson 1
A star with long arms
Reticular cells live inside your spleen. Each one has a small body and long, thin arms that reach out in many directions.
The arms of one cell touch the arms of its neighbors. Together they make a big 3D net, a bit like a spider web or a climbing frame.
Wow!The word reticular comes from a Latin word that means a little net.
Lesson 2
Building the net
Reticular cells make thin threads called reticular fibers. They wrap their arms around these threads.
- The net gives the soft spleen its shape.
- White blood cells and clean-up cells sit and crawl along it.
- Blood flows slowly through the gaps, so it can be checked.
Without the net, the cells inside the spleen would have nothing to hold on to.
Try thisPress Light up the net on the 3D model to see the fibers the reticular cells build.
