Lesson 1
Builders in the white wall
The sclera is the white of your eye. It wraps almost all the way around the eyeball, like the hard shell of an egg, but it's tough and a little bendy.
Scleral fibroblasts are long, thin cells that live between thick bundles of fibers. They are the builders that make those fibers.
Lesson 2
A tough, strong wall
The cells make collagen, a strong, rope-like protein. The bundles crisscross in all directions, so the wall is very hard to tear.
- The sclera protects the delicate parts inside your eye.
- It keeps your eyeball round.
- The small muscles that move your eye are attached to it.
Try thisLook in a mirror and move your eyes left and right. Muscles attached to the sclera are pulling your eyeball around! Then press Build fibers on the 3D model.
Wow!The sclera looks white because its fibers are jumbled. Light bounces off them in every direction, like light on snow.
