Lesson 1
Patrol cells
Natural killer cells, or NK cells, are a kind of white blood cell. They are round, with a nucleus and lots of little packets called granules.
They travel in your blood and visit places like your liver, spleen, and lymph nodes.
Wow!NK cells don't need to meet a germ first to know something is wrong. They are ready from the start. That's why they are called natural killers!
Lesson 2
Checking for "I'm OK" tags
Healthy cells wear little tags that say "I'm one of you, I'm OK." Some sick cells, like cells taken over by viruses, lose these tags.
- An NK cell checks a cell for its tags.
- If the tags are missing, the NK cell releases its granules.
- The sick cell shuts down before it can cause more trouble.
Try thisScroll up to the 3D model and press Check the tags, then Release the granules.
