Lesson 1
Inside a lymph node
You have hundreds of small, bean-shaped lymph nodes. Some are in your neck, armpits, and belly.
Inside each one are fibroblastic reticular cells. They are star-shaped, with long, thin arms that link up into a big net.
Try thisWhen you have a cold, the lymph nodes in your neck can get a little bigger and sore. That means your immune cells are busy working inside them.
Lesson 2
Roads and road signs
Immune cells called T cells crawl through the lymph node looking for signs of germs. They need a path to follow.
- The road builder cells make a net of fibers. T cells crawl along it like cars on roads.
- They give off signals that guide immune cells, like road signs.
- They help keep the T cells healthy while they wait.
Wow!Some of the fibers are hollow, like tiny pipes. Small bits from the body can travel through them deep into the lymph node.
