Lesson 1
The dark bottom layer
The ciliary body is a ring of folded tissue behind your iris. It is covered by two layers of cells.
These cells are the bottom layer. They are dark brown because they are full of melanin, the same brown color that is in skin and hair. This dark layer keeps going all the way to the back of the eye, where it lines the retina.
Lesson 2
Passing things along
These cells sit right next to tiny blood vessels. They take in water, salts, and food from the blood side.
Then they pass them through tiny doorways to the pale cells on top. The pale cells finish the job and release clear eye fluid.
Try thisPress Make eye fluid on the 3D model and follow the dots from the blood vessel, through both layers, into the eye.
Wow!The two layers are stuck together top to top. That happened because the eye folded in like a cup while you were growing before you were born.
