Lesson 1
Waiting by the door
Inside each ovule is a little team of 7 cells called the embryo sac. The egg cell sits at the end near a tiny opening, the door where a pollen tube will come in.
Two helper cells called synergids sit right beside it. The big central cell fills the space above.
A plant egg cell has no shell. It is so small you need a microscope to see it.
Lesson 2
Starting a baby plant
Pollen carries sperm cells to the egg cell. The egg holds half of the plant's instructions (DNA), and the sperm cell holds the other half. When they join, a seed starts to form.
The joined cell is called a zygote (ZY-goat). It splits again and again and grows into the embryo, the baby plant tucked inside the seed.
Try thisPress Join with a sperm cell on the 3D model. At home, soak a dry lima bean in water overnight. Gently split it in half and look for the tiny baby plant inside!
Wow!Every seed has its own baby plant. So each pea in a pod came from its own egg cell!
