Lesson 1
Three cells at the far end
Inside each ovule is a team of 7 cells called the embryo sac. At one end are the egg cell and its two helpers. At the opposite end are usually three antipodal cells (an-TIP-oh-dul).
Their name means on the opposite side, because they sit as far from the egg as they can get.
Try thisFind the three orange antipodal cells at the top of the 3D model, then press Pass food.
Lesson 2
A job scientists are still studying
Antipodal cells sit at the end where food comes in from the parent plant. Scientists think they may help pass food into the embryo sac.
In many plants, they break down soon after a seed starts to form. But in grasses like corn and wheat, they can split to make many more cells.
Wow!Even today, scientists don't know everything these little cells do. There are still mysteries hiding inside flowers!
