Lacunar Collenchyma Cells (Air-Space Support Cells)

Some support cells leave little air gaps between them, then make their walls extra thick right around those gaps. That is lacunar collenchyma!

Lesson 1

Round cells with air gaps

Lacunar collenchyma cells are a kind of collenchyma: living cells that help hold up young stems.

They are roundish, so small air spaces are left where they meet. The walls are thickest right around those air spaces.

Scientists find this kind in the stems of some plants, for example in plants of the pumpkin family.
