Juxtaglomerular Cells (Blood Pressure Guards)

Your blood needs enough push to reach every part of you. These kidney cells keep watch, and call for help when the push gets too low.

Lesson 1

Guards in the blood vessel wall

Each kidney filter has a tiny blood vessel going in. In its wall are special juxtaglomerular cells. Juxta means next to, so the name means next to the filter.

They are plump cells filled with tiny packets called granules. The granules hold a chemical called renin.

Wow!

These cells can feel how much the blood vessel wall is being stretched. Less stretch means lower blood pressure.
