Lesson 1
Flat cells that make a cup
Your kidneys are full of tiny filters. Each filter is a little ball of blood vessels called a glomerulus.
Around each ball is a hollow cup, a bit like a ball sitting in a catcher's mitt. Parietal cells make the outer wall of that cup.
They are very flat, thin cells, laid side by side like tiles.
Wow!Each kidney has about a million of these tiny filters, and each one has its own cup!
Lesson 2
Catching the filtered fluid
Blood gets squeezed through the ball of blood vessels. Water, salt, and other small things leak out. Blood cells stay in.
- The parietal cells make a tight wall, so the fluid stays in the cup.
- The cup has one way out: a tiny tube called a tubule.
- Down the tubule, the fluid slowly becomes pee.
Try thisPress Filter the blood on the 3D model and watch fluid flow out of the cup.
