Lesson 1
A giant on your bones
Osteoclasts live on the surface of your bones. They are giant cells.
An osteoclast forms when several smaller cells join into one. That is why it can have many nuclei instead of just one.
Wow!One osteoclast can have lots of nuclei. Most of your cells only have one!
Lesson 2
Clearing away old bone
- An osteoclast seals itself tightly onto the bone.
- It releases acid and special chemicals that dissolve a tiny patch of old bone.
- Then bone builder cells called osteoblasts fill the spot with new bone.
This teamwork keeps your bones strong. It also helps a broken bone heal and reshape, and it lets calcium out into your blood when your body needs it.
Try thisPress Dissolve old bone on the 3D model, then Builders arrive.
