Lesson 1
Little islands of cells
Your pancreas is an organ tucked behind your stomach. Scattered inside it are tiny clusters of cells called islets, like little islands.
Many of the cells in each islet are beta cells. Their job is to make insulin.
Wow!A pancreas has about a million of these tiny islands!
Lesson 2
A key for sugar
After you eat, sugar from your food goes into your blood. Your cells need that sugar for energy.
Beta cells notice the sugar and release insulin. Insulin works like a key. It helps your cells open up and take the sugar in from the blood.
Try thisScroll up to the 3D model and press Sugar arrives, then Release insulin.
Lesson 3
When beta cells need help
In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the beta cells by mistake. Then the body can't make enough insulin.
People with type 1 diabetes take insulin medicine and check their blood sugar. With this help, they can play sports, go to school, and do all the things other kids do.
You can't catch diabetes from someone, like a cold.
