Lesson 1
Floating in the body fluid
Earthworms wiggle through garden soil. Sea stars (also called starfish) creep along rocks in the ocean. They look nothing alike, but both have a space inside their bodies filled with fluid.
Coelomocytes float and crawl around in that fluid. Many of them are blobby and can change shape. They push out arms of the cell to move and to grab things.
They are a lot like your white blood cells!

Lesson 2
Guarding the inside
- Eating germs: they wrap around germs and swallow them up.
- Teaming up: lots of them can clump together around something that doesn't belong, to trap it.
- Fixing hurts: they gather at a wound to help close it up.
This keeps the animal safe from germs, even though it lives in dirt or seawater full of them.
Wow!Sea stars and earthworms are very different animals, but scientists found that both use the same smart trick to fight germs: cells that eat them.
